A halter is placed around a horse’s head and mouth so that a person on the ground can guide the horse by hand, and potentially also attach a lead rope so that the horse is easier still to control when walking on the ground. It is often wrongly confused with a bridle, which is used by a rider to guide the horse. Halters are much safer to use when on the ground than bridles because a bridle may damage the horse’s mouth if the horse is startled and moves around. Leads are useful as you can quickly clip them onto a halter and give yourself a handle on the horse.
